Widening the roads programme

In December the secretary of state for transport announced the government's response to the latest round of multi modal studies. Focusing on five key, but congested, transport corridors across the country, the studies identified several road-based solutions and threw the delivery ball firmly into the Highways Agency's court. Alistair Darling's ￡5.5billion package of major national and local transport measures contained a number of substantial projects either for immediate inclusion in the Targeted Programme of Improvements or gave the go-head for a scheme to be developed.
