In dim and dark conditions, the invisibility of unmarked heavy vehicles can cause horrendous accidents resulting in human injuries, costly repairs, downtime and even the loss of life. Rear and side impact crashes involving heavy or long vehicles could be substantially reduced if more vehicles had retroreflective safety (conspicuity) markings on the rear and sides. This year, Italy has made mandatory the use of retroreflective conspicuity markings on new HGVs under the legislation UN ECE 104.
