The Normanton Home Zone project is a first for both Derby City Council and Morrison Highway Maintenance (formerly AWG) and is described as a beacon scheme. It is one of 61 schemes throughout the country selected as Home Zone Challenge sites. The aim is to transform repetitive terraced streets, currently dominated by the car, into "linear courtyards" by creating spaces, which can be shared by people and vehicles. Each Home Zone will be designed to ensure that vehicles must travel at very low speeds with pedestrians and cyclists having informal priority.
