Lighting the way for sustainability

Sustatinability, the capacity for continu-V ance into the long term future, is an important element of achieving a better quality of life for everyone. The Rio Earth Summit (1992) catapulted sustainable development to the forefront of international government policy. Simple 'sustainability' advances can be made, for example, through direct savings in fuel consumption (vehicle movements and energy inputs). It is also important for industry not only to consider materials, but also to look wider than their engineering structures and consider matters such as lighting technology and the adoption of performance indicators that promote best practice. The willingness of lighting engineers to continue to exploit the latest developments in lighting will continue to reap environmental and economic advantage.
