A grand scale job

When we started work on the country's largest ever road recycling project on the A38 in Devon, we realised that the scheme would attract a great deal of attention and if successful, could change the way that highway maintenance is specified and managed in the future. And now as the project nears completion, it is time to review the scheme. The main difference has been the scale of the project. While road recycling is becoming an increasing part in highway resurfacing and construction projects, this project is by far the biggest of its kind to date. In order to resurface the 12 km route between Plymouth and Exeter, we planned to use about 70,000 tonnes of recycled asphalt whilst producing around 100,000 tonnes of road planings.
