Your usual columnist Will Howie is away. Not only is he not writing this month's column but he has also chosen to go en vacances during what has probably been the Labour government's shakiest week since it came to power 2,500 years ago. There are those of you who might cynically suggest it is a timely absence on the part of our Labour peer contributor. However, I can assure you that, wherever any government's failings are concerned, Lord Howie has never been "backwards in coming forwards" as they say here in Kingston-upon Hull.
