Five in line for landmark Welsh road

Five groups are expected to return bids this month for one of the biggest roads projects to come out of Wales in years - an estimated ￡80 million project to complete a distributor road at Port Talbot in the south of the principality. The contractors working up bids are Carillion, Costain, Morrison, Sir Robert McAlpine and a joint venture between German titan Hochtief and local outfit Alun Griffiths. The client on the project is Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, which submitted a planning application for the proposal in July. The scheme is the third phase of the distributor road. Contracts for the two earlier sections were both won by the Alun Griffiths/Hochtief joint venture, which connected a roundabout with Port Talbot's industrial estate in the ￡11 million first phase then upgraded a section of road to dual carriageway in the ￡19 million second section.
