MEMBER PROFILE JOHN NIGHTINGALE CENG

John joined JCT eight months ago to further develop their consultancy services, their innovations and design strengths. JCT leads in the traffic signals field, and John recently visited Edinburgh, Bournemouth, Dublin, Glasgow and Wales, from JCT's new Headquarters near Lincoln. He is heavily involved in computer modelling, in providing consultancy support and in training although he identifies the lack of skilled Traffic Signals Engineers across the country, as a "wage shortage," not a "skills shortage". A future challenge is to develop analytical tools that will enable Local Authorities to quantify the extent to which particular signals create delays, to help them to allocate resources effectively to eliminate blockages. John came into engineering after a variety of jobs, including working on the construction of a luxury yacht in Australia. Returning to the UK he joined the Traffic Systems Co-operative in Sheffield and then Doncaster MBC on the Accident Investigation and Prevention side. Doncaster was very supportive, and enabled him to achieve his MSc at the Institute for Transport Studies at Leeds.
