Britain's roads will not be able to cope with the 60-torme foreign 'mega-lorries' that the European Union are planning to allow to be driven on UK roads, warns Britpave, the transport infrastructure group. The UK government banned mega-lorry trials last year but new EU regulations to be adopted by the European Parliament means that by next year they could travel freely across all of the EU. Currently, vehicles longer than 18.7rn metres or heavier than 44 tonnes are prohibited in the UK. The new mega-lorries would be 22.25 metres and weigh up to 60 tonnes. Their use in the UK would require extensive bridge and road strengthening.
