Completion of the second road tunnel of the New Tyne Crossing project is on schedule for February 2011 after the fourth and final immersed tube section was successfully floated out and sunk into position at the end of February this year. The tubes - 90m long by 15m wide and 8.5m high reinforced concrete boxes with steel bulkheads -were constructed 3km upstream at the Walker Dry Dock by Bouygues TP's principal river works subcontractor VolkerStevin Marine. All four 10,000t segments have now been sunk into position within a dredged trench in the riverbed and joined and sealed together and to transition tunnel sections with steel Gina gaskets.
