Just removing water from roads is no longer enough

The traditional approach to rainwater and drainage on roads and highways, with its emphasis on ensuring that wastewater was simply removed from road surfaces, is no longer viable. Jason Shingleton from Polypipe Civils examines the new generation of drainage solutions which focus on sustainability and water quality. Oil and fuel deposits which fall onto roads represent a significant risk to water quality and the wider environment in the UK. Left untreated, they can quickly find their way in to watercourses, surface water, ponds and other natural drainage processes, threatening wildlife and damaging habitats.
