Savings mean green light for £4bn PFI schemes

Procurement on three major Private Finance Initiative (PFI) road maintenance concessions in Sheffield, the Isle of Wight and Hounslow, west London, can resume after the local authorities behind the deals found massive savings.The initial total cost of the three roads schemes and another proposal to extend the Nottingham Tram has been slashed by 21 per cent-or £209 million. Transport minister Norman Baker said: "Following the spending review last year, we challenged the four local authorities to look again at the cost of the PFI projects they are promoting to ensure we get maximum value for every pound we spend.
