According to the Highways Agency, in recent years there have been as many as 400 road accidents annually where vehicles have crossed the central reservation barrier, with approximately 40 of those resulting in fatalities. A separate report by Transport Research Laboratory into the number reported accidents on the M25, estimated that around 70 per cent of these kind of accidents could be avoided if concrete barriers were implemented.
