In the 2012 budget, the coalition government reiterated its commitment to deliver significant reductions in public sector spending and set out its plans to deliver substantial savings over the next five years. The maintenance of the United Kingdom's highways network accounts for a substantial portion of public spending and is already being targeted as a sector in which savings can be made.
