Road salt is undoubtedly an effective agent for controlling and preventing snow and ice build up on roadways but its use on elevated structures like bridges and flyovers can dramatically reduce their service life, particularly those constructed using steel reinforced concrete where chloride corrosion can have a particularly marked effect.
