The Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA) has just presented the Transport Select Committee with a report on a snapshot of the quality of centre lines on 500 miles - a cross-section of motorways and major A roads managed by the Highways Agency, and lesser A and B roads managed by local authorities, (see box) RSMA surveyors found that, on average, 50.6% of the surveyed road markings in the UK are barely visible, scoring less than 80 millicandelas -the rating of the line's retro-reflectivity, at which, under Highways Agency standards, the line must be replaced immediately.
