CE marks the spot

It was 20 years ago last July when the term CE marking came into being and the 93/68/EEC directive replaced the old term 'EC mark'. Most probably remember it first appearing crudely marked on a childhood toy next to the country of origin as a guarantee of conformance to the essential requirements of the relevant European legislation. Knowing a product has achieved a certain standard gives us confidence in the product in question, that it is fit for purpose, tried and tested. The highways industry has had recent experience of this, with the announcement that from 1 July this year, under the Construction Products Regulations (CPR), it is a legal requirement for any permanent fixed road traffic sign that is going to be sold to have the CE mark.
