High winds, temperatures and precipitation are all weather elements that have a significant impact on bridge operation. Rapidly changing weather conditions on bridges can impact on safety of road users and maintenance crew. Owing to their exposed locations, bridges are often susceptible to high winds. Strong gusts can create safety hazards for road users (particularly high-sided vehicles) and maintenance staff. In extreme cases, bridge operators take the decision to close the bridge if wind gusts hit a certain threshold.
