Kier has rocketed into fourth place in the top 20 ranking of roads' contractors after concluding a £221 million acquisition of May Gurney. This spring, MGWSP - a joint venture between May Gurney and consultant WSP - bagged a contract for road maintenance in Suffolk for the county council that, with extensions, could be worth up to £500 million. Balfour Beatty had been preferred bidder on the deal but at the start of this year the contract was put out to tender again after the council and the contractor were unable to agree a deal.
