The ITS (UK) Freight IG met as the guests of AECOM in London to discuss the potential of big data for freight applications. It was agreed that clever use of big data has a lot of potential to improve the freight sector but not just "big" but all forms of data are not used as well as they could be. As a result the sector is more inefficient, costly, and environmentally damaging than it needs to be and suffers the resulting reputational damage. Problems which could be better addressed include congestion, safe stopping areas, availability of parking spaces and loading bays, air quality and other environmental benefits, security, and customer demands. But from the customers' point of view, it can seem as if we offer a bewildering range of telematics solutions with no help in selecting what is suitable or not.
