As part of a cost saving exercise in 2006, Buckinghamshire County Council made the decision to remove fortnightly night-time patrols. Labour intensive and costly to the council, the move was welcomed and its simple, low-tech replacement was established in the form of a communications campaign to help residents and road users self-serve, directing them to report street light faults online. Few reports were made over the first 12 months, but over the following years a rising number of faults were called in, which dramatically increased as the clocks changed in the Autumn as street lights 'lit up' earlier in the day.
