Roadworks - often described as motorists worst nightmare - but to those in the industry a necessary requirement when carrying out improvements/repairs on strategic and local roads. The news that stretches of roadworks on motorways and A-roads in England could be limited to two miles or less was therefore surprising (see industry round-up for more). My view is that in the majority of cases roadworks can be limited, especially if just a quick repair is needed. But what about the major projects that are being carried out across the country? I recently travelled on the M3 to the New Forest. The M3 between junction 2 (interchange with the M25) and junction 4a (Fleet) is being upgraded to a four-lane motorway by converting the hard shoulder to a permanent running lane.
