In the spirit of the theme of this issue I thought I would try and tackle the issue of rutting in bituminous pavements, areas such as bus lanes and traffic light junctions. There is more than one cause of rutting, it can be caused by mechanical failure in the lower layers, or by deformation of the surface materials. This article is about surface material deformation, rutting caused by structural failure, is usually fairly obvious from the amount of longitudinal cracking and crazing in the wheel track. The treatment is straightforward, if expensive, and requires reconstruction of some part road structure after a suitable investigation of the road and the road foundation.
