Make surface water pollution monitoring a priority

With more than one million Wdischarges of highway runoff across the UK, there can be little doubt that hundreds of tonnes of sediment-bound pollutants are entering the environment every year Surface water pollution is mainly considered to be a diffuse problem. However, high concentrations of pollutants picked up and carried in surface water during a heavy storm are being discharged via piped drainage outfalls. These point-source 'hot-spots' of concentrated pollutant discharge could be easily measured, monitored and prevented. Unfortunately, all too frequently they are overlooked.
