The first marks for excellence for the Mersey Gateway Bridge, the new six-lane toll bridge over the Mersey between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, came in 2015 when it won two international awards for its innovative financing model. Construction costs were £600m, while the cost of operation, maintenance and finance will take the whole project to £1.86bn up to 2044.
