CI is part of a wider move towards collaborative working between client and contractor and one that has been around for roughly two decades. The aim is to enable better collaboration and efficiency by having the design, development and construction planning phase of projects contracted alongside the main detailed design and construction phase, as part of a two-stage process. The intention is that the same contractor contributes to both stages.
