Strength and depth in road safety

Last year the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) identified the 50 most dangerous stretches of road in England, prompting ministers to offer councils a £175m Safer Roads Fund to improve them. This was a reaction to what was in itself a reactive method of assessing high-risk roads, based on RSF Eurorap data of actual crash statistics. An alternative and proactive approach is to use what we know about road design to find sections where 'deficiencies in the road environment' make them more dangerous.
