The Government's new draft plan to tackle toxic air pollution, announced in May, puts the onus on councils to take action to deal with high levels of nitrogen dioxide (N0_2) both within and outside towns and cities. It was published for consultation after the High Court rejected a government attempt to delay until after the General Election. Environment department Defra said the 'options' set out in the document 'are designed to reduce the impact of diesel vehicles, and accelerate the move to cleaner transport'.
