Shortly after this magazine is published, the United Kingdom will go to the polls. Highways, and the infrastructure sector at large, is lucky in some ways to be sheltered from the most bitter of political debates. Roads and transport usually only evoke the strongest feelings at a local level, whether it's a new bypass, a new runway or a new street design. We are seldom subjected to the usual skulduggeries of national politics. The downside is that our sector can be overlooked at times and politicians feel they can turn the funding tap on or off, without realising how badly this can affect quality, value for money, safety and the wider economy.
