Cutting carriageway reinforcement costs

Afull road closure was required to carry out work on Skanska and Cambridgeshire CC's cariageway replacement in New Road so time savings were a key consideration. The use of tyre bales meant that disruption to residents and motorists was reduced. The existing carriageway was constructed using reinforced concrete slabs with a depth between 250-400mm. It was experiencing movement because these slabs were lying on a peat and clay soil with little support.
