Digital dreams: Driving the country forwards

Elliot Shaw is one of National Highways'star performers; a safe pair of hands under questioning, an eager attitude, easy competence and the kind of CV (Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, the Department for Transport, the Ministry of Justice) that makes him suited to MI6, let alone a government-owned roads company. The only cloud in this bright sky is the heavy lifting needed to live up to National Highways' tendency to, shall we say, sell the dream. It is fair to say that the Digital Roads strategy is intelligent, ambitious and full of bright ideas. And while there are some important targets for the next few years - the use of sensors and drones could make a real difference - it is less fair to say for instance that self-healing roads are around the corner.
