Among the array of ideas, facts, figures, new perspectives and calculations (performed out loud, mid-spoken-paragraph and without pause for breath), that Prof Read, general manager technology of Shell Bitumen, can rattle off when he is involved in a conversation about bitumen, one very significant statistic stands out: 'An ever-increasing proportion of our R&D in bitumen is on sustainability - lowering carbon or circularity. Perhaps five years ago 10% of our effort would have gone into those areas. Now it would be well in excess of 50%.' Shell is looking to achieve a circular economy for longer-lasting roads - or as close to perfect as is possible. After years of research and study into the oxidization process, Prof Read's team seem to be on the brink of huge breakthroughs.
