It is estimated that we need over 400,000 new workers in our industry per year to meet demand, and 36,000 specifically in the infrastructure sector, according to the Arcadis Talent Scale. We currently have a perfect storm of an increasing workload, an ageing workforce, failing to attract the younger generation, and the potential loss of workers back to the mainland EU countries after Brexit. We are seeing many cases of poor-quality design and construction resulting in devastating circumstances, think about Grenfell, or the new Scottish schools with collapsing walls. We have had a number of large high-profile companies collapse through poor management, and we have the highest suicide rate out of any industry.
