Once upon a sign

It was back in the 1960s that the first motorway sign was introduced in the UK and it will be no surprise that over the years these have changed somewhat - a sign of the times if you will. The first signs were born of necessity: as the motorway network started to take shape it became clear that drivers had no experience of driving at speed and a series of unplanned events started to hit the headlines. Signs already existed on local roads, but these weren't suitable for the needs of a motorway. The first signs, which are like many still around today, were installed in 1965.
