After one of the hottest summers on record the deluge came down hard. It is this type of switching between extremes that climate change specialises in and causes engineers nightmares and unprecedented challenges. In Derbyshire, the Toddbrook Reservoir dam came perilously close to collapse, while across the North, the repair bill will run to millions, with bridges destroyed, roads severely damaged and hundreds of houses flooded.
