Flyovers epitomised modernity in the decades after the Second World War. As car ownership became affordable to the masses, grade separation was the obvious way to manage conflicts at urban intersections. Through traffic on flyovers soared above the humdrum daily life on the streets below. Technological advances made concrete flyovers relatively cheap and quick to construct. As the piers were narrow and spaced at wide intervals, valuable space was available beneath the decks for other uses, including roads. What is not to like about flyovers? Quite a lot, now that Britain is rediscovering the benefits of walking and cycling and suffering the various drawbacks of urban roads overburdened with motorised traffic.
