A general expression of the scattering intensity for crystalline and non-crystalline materials hasbeen proposed by introducing the correlationsof the thermal displacements of atoms. The main contribution to the observed oscillatory diffusescattering from crystalline powder samples of CUI at 290 K was from the correlation between the thermal displacements of copper and iodine atoms. The temperature dependence of the X-ray scattering intensity for amorphous Pd_80 Si_20 and the neutron thermal scattering intensity for amorphous Ge were discussed with the theory.
