Further to Jim Lesurf's interesting article in the August issue about the effects of room reflections, there is another factor I believe could be taken into account when considering replay levels in domestic surroundings - hearing. Under typical (or natural) situations a human is able to distinguish and interpret an incredible range of sounds, both in level, frequency and, courtesy of our 'stereo' configuration, direction. However, there are safety mechanisms built in to protect us from excesses.
