Please may I respond to the article arguing for spirituality to have a more prominent part in Navy life - and a particular part in programmes of character development. Our Navy, and the people who serve in it and in the wider Australian Defence Force, stand severally and individually in defence of human rights and freedoms. Much discourse of human rights is found in the various spiritual and religious traditions. However, there is an equally compelling case to be made that spiritual and religious traditions of all kinds in many generations, have been responsible for the obliteration of human rights and dignities.
