Captain Norman Banks -1958-2011

Captain Norman Stewart Banks, a most respected career naval officer, passed away on 2 December 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Norman Banks was born in the Orkney Islands in Scotland on 31 May 1958. His childhood was that of a traditional islander of the period and this included often wearing a kilt to school. Norman was the son of Stewart and Nancy Banks who had a long tradition of farming and fishing. His family immigrated to Australia in the earlier 1970s and settled in Melbourne. Norman quickly embraced the Australian way of life and developed an Australian accent that belied his Scottish origins.
