Over half a century ago, Maurice Merleau-Ponty began Phenomenology of Perception with a question: "What is phenomenology?" He continues: "It may seem strange that this question has still to be asked half a century after the first works of Husserl. The fact remains that it has by no means been answered."1 However, stranger than this is the fact that many architectural thinkers seem to treat this question as largely settled. Steven Holl, Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Zumthor, and many of their acolytes have been identified (and self-identified) as architectural phenomenologists.
