Situated a couple of hundred yards from the River Thames about 14 miles east of London, Erith has been home to Owens Ironmongery for 100 years and 94 year old Vera Adkins, daughter of the shop's founder, Mr Thorn, is still the major shareholder of the business. The original business was founded as W J Owen in 1896 as a ships chandler and Mr Thorn was working within the company when the chance came to purchase the business. He immediately renamed the business Owens Ironmongery and dropped the two initials "W J".
