We don't see many of these sorts of shops anymore." That's the common comment that Mike Goslin hears from people when they visit his hardware shop in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. Although only opened in the early 1980s, Boroughbridge Hardware has a small framed Dickensian-style wooden window and even the door squeaks every time it is opened. Indeed, the shop really suits the small town, which only has 3,500 inhabitants but dates back to Roman times. Situated on the edge of the town on what was the original Great North Road, the square-shaped shop of around 700sq ft is a one-man band operation.
