Offshore enterprises' significance in Cypriot economy

Mention of the events leading to the de facto division of Cyprus twenty one years ago reveals that the wounds have yet to heal. However, these events, or rather their results, do in fact mark the beginning of Cyprus's structural economic change. First and foremost there was the pressing need to provide adequate Jobs for the then unemployed. Tourism was and still is, of course, an important economic factor, but by no means does it consti-tute on its own a sufficient base to build a stable industry. One of the Solutions to the problem was the attraction of foreign enterprises and the development of an offshore sector.
