The Shipbuilding Market in the Years Ahead

1. 1995 will be a turning point for the world shipbuilding market in the years to come. As any market, that for ships will be determined by three factors: the evolution of demand; the evolution of supply, i.e. capacities; and the policy frame which governments set for competition between countries and firms. What sets the coming years apart from the past is the fact that each of these three factors will take on a shape which is different from what has been experienced before: the coming years will be characterised by firstly, good prospects for demand; secondly, the likelihood of increased supply and of a growing number of suppliers competing for that demand, and thirdly a new policy frame for competition, as a result of the »Agreement Respecting Normal Competitive Conditions in the Commercial Shipbuilding and Repair Industry« which the OECD countries and Korea have recently concluded.
