COREX™ Car Decks

Special welding techniques allow the production of thin and very light steel sandwich panels. This application is used by some yards for accommodation decks already. MacGregor introduces it now as COREX™ for car decks and ramps onboard ro-ro-ships. MacGREGOR has developed a new stainless steel sandwich panel with a wide range of potential applications in the shipbuilding industry. The first application now being introduced, to the market is to use the COREX™ panels for fixed and hoistable car decks/ramps. As weil as newbuilding installations, car decks based on COREX™ panel construction are particularly suitable for RoRo conversions. Car decks built from COREX™ panels have substantially reduced profiles and are about half the weight of conventional car decks. These advantages offer considerabie design freedom in terms of reduced lightship weight, reduced moulded depth and increased stability. In turn these factors can be used to maximise the flexibility of RoRo ships and increase various payloads, resulting in optimised vessel profitability and also a higher second-hand value.
