The Wartsila 50 DF dual-fuel engine gives new meaning to the words fuel flexibility and high per-formance. Combining the well-proven Wartsila dual-fuel concept and the reliable Wartsila 46 HFO diesel engine, it offers high output with unparalleled efficiency and fuel flexibility. The Wartsila 50 DF is a four-stroke dual-fuel engine that can be run either on natural gas or light fuel oil (LFO) and, with certain modifications, also on heavy fuel oil (HFO). It is especially developed for service onboard the first diesel-elec-tric driven liquid natural gas (LNG) carrier in the world. Mainly liquid gas from the carried cargo is used to create propulsion power. But in all cases, when there is not sufficient LNG, normal petrol oils or even HFO have to be burnt. The combustion processes are different for burning LNG, which needs ignition, and LFO or even HFO, which is in the normal diesel compression mode. Moreover, the engine can switch over from gas to LFO and vice versa smoothly during engine operation.
