Submarine Class 209/1400mod SAN

The 15th June 2004 saw the naming ceremony of the first Class 209/ 1400mod submarine for the South African Navy (SAN) at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) in Kiel. Godmother was Dr. Ruth Segomotso Mom-pati, Executive Mayor of Vryburg, North West Province, South Africa. The boat HDW Yard No. 365 was named »S101« and slowly lowered into the water by a corresponding ship-lift. Before this submarine was really floating on its own Kiel the naming ceremony and delivery of corvette MEKO~R A-200 SAN (see HANS A1/2004, page 24) took place along the outfitting quay. HDW Yard No. 369 was named »Mendi«, she is the fourth unit within series of four, two being built by Blohm +Voss in Hamburg and the other two by HDW in Kiel.
