100 years Alpha-CP-Propellers

Since a century MAN and B&W are known as potential producers of diesel engines. Rudolf Diesel (1858-1913) developed a self-igniting combustion engine, bearing his name, in the late 1890s. The corresponding granted patent is dated 23.02.1893. This 100 years anniversary was celebrated on 23rd February 1993 in Augsburg (see HANSA 4/1993, page 42). It took some time until the first really operating diesel engine went on board a floating vessel. Nowadays opinions differ about this vessel: Was it a lake-, river- or really a seagoing ship? Anyhow, a first diesel engine was installed on cargo-carrying barge Petit Pierre in 1903, followed by river-going tankers Vandal/Sarmat in 1904 and only then sea-going ship Selandia in 1912. MAN B&W Diesel AG, Augsburg, reminded the maritime community by a press release that they count the year 1903 (see HANSA 11/2003, page 38) as to be remembered as date for the first swimming diesel engine.
