China has declared its intent to be the number one amongst shipbuilding nations in a few years time. The full order books of the existing shipyards and the massive expansion of shipyard capacity leave little room to doubt that the »Middle Kingdom« will achieve this target. In the course of this development China focuses on large tonnage vessels. This strategy makes sense in the light of the consistently growing trade with the global market and the immense requirements of this fast developing nation. The majority of the future VLCC and other very large box ships, general cargo vessels and bulk carriers will be built in Asia and the Chinese shipbuilding industry is getting ready for its share.
